HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD A SAFER PLACE

When we think of the word “neighborhood,” pleasant images typically pop into our minds. Perhaps we recall summer barbecues filled with chatting, laughter, and grills full of hamburgers and hot dogs! For others, their next-door neighbor may come to mind. They remember swapping baked goods, and collecting the other’s mail and newspaper when they went on vacation. Still other people may remember the general sense of community felt, even among people who have never spoken. While this sort of harmony can exist, we should always maintain neighbourhood safety. We can achieve this goal taking steps such as using Children at Play signs to safeguard children at play.

No neighborhood in the world can be completely safeguarded from crime. Nevertheless, steps can be taken to keep both your family and your neighbourhood as a whole. For instance, meet your children’s parents prior to permitting them to go to their home. If you are unable to meet them, then telephone them. Learn what activities your children would do in their home, and whether they would be supervised.

In addition to knowing who your children are playing with, limit where they can play in your neighbourhood. This is because you probably would not want your children to visit certain homes, play in dangerous structures, or cross hectic roads. As a general rule, only permit your child to play in areas where Children at Play signs are posted, to shield children at play.

After setting perimeters about where your children can play and with whom they can play with, be aware of where your children are located at all times! Your children should inform you or obtain permission before exiting your house. When they lave home they should report to you or return by particular times. If available, your son or daughter should also provide you with a contact number of where they will be.

In addition to children’s playing be safe, they need the ability to take action when problems arise. First, they should memorize certain telephone numbers. Help your child to memorize his or her address and phone number, in addition to your work and cellular phone numbers. If they have difficulty doing that, then write down the information on a card and have them take that with them everywhere. Also, when you go out, inform your children where you will be and how they can contact you.

Next, choose a neighbor’s home where your children can go to, in the case that an emergency exists. Also, show your children other locations where they can go for assistance, such as police stations, stores and libraries.

Lastly, the concept of cooperation is vital in helping to maintain a safe environment for your children. First, instruct your children about how to resolve conflicts with by speaking, rather than fighting. Have them act out certain situations involving interpersonal problems, walking away from fights with fists, and actions to take when bullies harass them. Your children must be aware that teasing and taunting people can cause friends to be hurt, and new enemies created.
Next, become better acquainted with your neighbors and their children, so you can better cooperate with people on your block, to keep your neighborhood safe. For instance, you could work together to get more Children at Play signs posted in regions with children at play. Always watch for questionable and odd actions in your area.

The term “neighborhood” can create powerful, fond images in our minds. By keeping our neighborhoods safe, more of these images can be formed by protecting our children via means such as Children at Play signs to protect children at play.
